Missoula College

A public project for the Montana University System

About this project

This new five-story educational center features 110,000 square feet of usable space for varied purposes such as libraries, commercial kitchens, laboratories, classrooms and office spaces.

This structure, poised in the narrow neck of Hellgate Canyon, makes a fitting statement about the importance of education to the local community as it welcomes visitors driving westbound on I-90 as they enter the beautiful Missoula Valley.

The foundation is cast-in-place concrete walls, concrete pilasters, and concrete columns. The main floor is an elevated 10-inch-thick mild reinforced concrete plate slab. The upper floors are framed with a combination of steel bar joists, steel beams, glue-laminated timber beams, and steel girders with a concrete filled metal deck utilizing a composite steel and concrete design. The fourth floor over the assembly area is framed with composite castellated steel beams with a span exceeding 60 feet.
